Please find below information on the ‘European Handball Manager’ education program. This program is organized in cooperation of European Handball Federation, Deutsche Sporthochschule Köln and FCH. Usually each year there are about 20 participants per course. In season 23/24 the program will be not be organized due to a Sabbatical of the head of the program, Stefan Walzel.
The program will be organized in English language in season 24/25 and in German language in season 25/26. Next deadline will be 30th April 2024 for season 24/25.

Die letzten 30 Tage brechen an! Interessierte Führungspersönlichkeiten im Handball können sich noch bis 30. April für die 20 Plätze im erfolgreichen Zertifikatsstudiengang European Handball Manager (EHM) bewerben. Mehr als zehn Bewerbungen sind bereits eingegangen – so viele wie nie zuvor zu diesem Zeitpunkt.
Der Start des vierten deutschsprachigen Jahrgangs rückt näher: Ab 1. Juli werden die nächsten European Handball Manager ausgebildet. Sie durchlaufen dann einen exklusiven Zertifikatsstudiengang, der von der Deutschen Sporthochschule Köln in enger Zusammenarbeit mit der European Handball Federation (EHF) entwickelt wurde. Unter fachlich exzellenter Betreuung und hohem Anwendungsbezug eignen sich die Teilnehmenden hier innerhalb eines Jahres wichtiges und handballspezifisches Know-how in unterschiedlichsten Themenbereichen wie Ökonomie, Recht und Kommunikation an.
Das Niveau des Zertifikatsstudiengangs ist hoch, die Inhalte werden stets den aktuellen Entwicklungen im Handballsport angepasst und durch erfahrene Expertinnen und Experten vermittelt. „Alle Referenten spielen in ihrem jeweiligen Arbeitsbereich in der ersten Liga“, bestätigt Benjamin Chatton, Geschäftsführer bei TSV Hannover-Burgdorf und Absolvent des ersten deutschen Jahrgangs im EHM 2015/2016. Auch Lina Heintschel von Heinegg, Geschäftsführerin bei der TUSEM Sport- & Marketing GmbH und ebenfalls Absolventin des EHM 2015/2016 ist überzeugt: „Wer in der höchsten Handballmanagerliga mitspielen möchte, kommt an diesem Zertifikatsprogramm nicht vorbei.”

18.5.2016: Prominente Handballmanager schließen Studium ab
Der erste Jahrgang des Zertifikatsstudiengangs European Handball Manager feiert am 27. Mai 2016 seinen erfolgreichen Abschluss. Mit dabei sind EHF-Präsident Jean Brihault und EHF-Generalsekretär Michael Wiederer.
Das letzte Mai-Wochenende steht in Köln ganz im Zeichen des Handballs: Kurz vor dem Start des VELUX EHF Champions League FINAL4 findet an der Deutschen Sporthochschule Köln die Abschlussfeier im Zertifikatsstudiengang European Handball Manager statt.
Ein Jahr lang haben sie die Hörsaalbank gedrückt und Lehrbücher gewälzt: Die ehemalige Handballnationalspielerin Grit Jurack, die Handballweltmeister Henning Fritz und Holger Glandorf sowie die Handballmanager Benjamin Chatton (TSV Hannover-Burgdorf) und Axel Geerken (MT Melsungen) sind gemeinsam mit elf weiteren TeilnehmerInnen die ersten AbsolventInnen des European Handball Manager. Am Freitag, 27. Mai 2016, werden sie offiziell mit dem Zertifikat ausgezeichnet. Seit Juli 2015 bietet die Deutsche Sporthochschule Köln diesen Zertifikatsstudiengang in Kooperation mit der European Handball Federation (EHF) an, der auf die zunehmenden Professionalisierungs- und Kommerzialisierungsprozesse im europäischen Handballsport vorbereitet.
Zur Abschlussfeier am Freitag, 27. Mai 2016, werden neben den prominenten TeilnehmerInnen des Studiengangs und VertreterInnen der Deutschen Sporthochschule Köln auch EHF-Präsident Jean Brihault und EHF-Generalsekretär Michael Wiederer erwartet.
Die offizielle Verleihung findet von 17 bis 18 Uhr im Restaurant im Hockey-Judo-Zentrum der Deutschen Sporthochschule Köln (Gästehaus der Deutschen Sporthochschule Köln, Guts-Muths-Weg 1, 50933 Köln) statt. Without a coaching licence one cannot coach a team. Without the proper qualification one cannot become a referee – but what about handball club managers?
The European Handball Federation together with the German Sports University Cologne decided to focus on the adequate education, matching the demands of national and international handball, for the people responsible for the clubs’ and federations’ business side of things.
Europe’s first professional qualification in handball management launched in July 2015 in German. The second edition will begin in September 2016 and this time will be offered in English.
Sharing of best practice examples
Each course will consist of a maximum of 20 participants, the deadline for the 2016 registration is 30 April. The enrolment fee is 5,000 euro.
Participants will have to be present at the Sports University for 16 days. The course ends with and oral and a written exam.
The course consists of five modules: Basics in economics and law, handball management, marketing and sponsoring, finances and licensing as well as media and communications.
The relevance of the further education programme is underlined by the inclusion of Michael Wiederer, EHF Secretary General, as a speaker.
“It is the right way to contribute to this study by investing into the successful future of handball and its management. Our trailblazers as European Handball Managers are a great group. Already the first presence phase showed the different perspectives, on which we can build on in the future,” Wiederer says.
Besides the education aspect, the organisers stress that the participants share best practice examples from their daily business.
Further experienced course lecturers including Sylvia Schenk (Head of the Working Group on Sport at Transparency Deutschland) and Prof. Dr. Martin Gutzeit (Professor of Civil Rights, Employment and Social Law at the Justus Liebig University Giessen) guarantee a high-quality programme with practical relevance.
Legal adviser and former national team goalkeeper, Andreas Thiel, will also be offering his expertise combining legal matters with aspects from professional handball.
The course targets former professional players and coaches and also managers, who have been working in professional handball for at least two years. University graduates with an expressed interest in the course are also eligible to apply.

11.1.2016 The first course of the ‘European Handball Manager’ started successfully
at the Deutsche Sport Hochschule Köln in German language. First Diplomas will be handed out to the participants during the Final4 in Cologne in May 2016. The first Englisch speaking course will start in July 2016.

The European Handball Federation (EHF) and the Deutsche Sporthochschule Köln (DSHS Köln) are preparing a one-year-course to become certified ‘European Handball Manager’. The course will be offered altering one year in German and one year in English language. The start of the first course will be in July 2015 in German language. The first certificates will be handed out to the new ‘European Handball Managers’ during the EHF VELUX Final4 in Cologne 2016. The first course in English language will start in July 2016.

EHF announces new qualification for Handball managers
Vienna, 4 February 2014. The EHF and the German Sport University Cologne have announced a cooperation that will see the introduction of a tailor‐made education course for uropean Handball managers from the beginning of the 2015/16 season. With the ever‐growing demands on Europe’s top clubs both in sporting and economic terms, the
EHF has recognised the need for professional clubs, federations and leagues to develop not only an effective structure and solid financial basis but also professional staff with the requisite Expertise and knowledge. Initially the new ‘European Handball Manager Programme’ will be open to a maximum of 20 participants. Alongside modules covering financial management, participants will also study aspects such as sports law, psychology and communication.
The programme will be offered in German and English in alternating years in order to ensure that handball managers from all European handball nations have the opportunity to take part. The initiative’s progress has been supported by the EHF’s Professional Handball Board, and Forum Club Handball, the organisation representing professional handball top clubs within Europe.
EHF President, Jean Brihault, praised the new development: “Modern handball is about much more than simply playing the game. Our top clubs, federations and leagues have become businesses and as such require professional staff with the skills and knowledge to run them. The German Sport University Cologne is one of Europe’s top sports universities and I am confident that the new programme will offer a valuable educational experience to those handball Managers taking part.”
Responsibility for the academic content of the course rests with the German Sport University Cologne. An advisory board made up additionally of the EHF, Forum Club Handball and two external academics will further support and advise on the further development of the programme. The EHF and the German Sport University Cologne plan to sign a cooperation agreement in the coming weeks when they will also release further details on both the course programme and registration programme. EHF und Sporthochschule planen Zertifikationsstudium „European Handball Manager” ab Saison 2015/16

Die Europäische Handball Föderation (EHF) und die Deutsche Sport-hochschule Köln wollen zukünftig stärker zusammenarbeiten. Ziel der Kooperation ist die Einführung eines maßgeschneiderten Aus- und Weiterbildungsangebots für europäische Handballmanager/innen.
In den letzten Jahren sind nicht nur die sportlichen sondern vor allem die wirtschaftlichen Anforderungen an die professionellen Handballvereine, -verbände sowie -ligaorganisationen enorm gestiegen. Ohne eine solide wirtschaftliche Basis, adäquate Strukturen und hervorragend ausgebildete handelnde Personen auch im Management ist die Zukunft des professionellen Handballs gefährdet.
Während für Handballtrainer teilweise seit mehreren Jahrzehnten entsprechende Mindestqualifikationskriterien festgelegt sind und die nationalen Handballverbände eigene Qualifizierungs- und Weiterbildungsprogramme für die Trainerinnen und Trainer im Handballhochleistungssport erfolgreich etabliert haben, fehlt etwas Vergleichbares auf nationaler wie internationaler Ebene für die wirtschaftliche Führung von Handballvereinen und in weiterer Folge auch für Verbände. Daher wollen EHF und die Kölner Sport-universität kooperieren und die europäischen Handballmanagerinnen und -manager in einem maßgeschneiderten Programm aus- und weiterbilden. Eine entsprechende Absichtserklärung haben beide Organisationen bereits unterzeichnet. Forum Club Handball, die europäische Vereinigung der Spitzenhandballclubs, begrüßt die Zusammenarbeit beider Organisationen und unterstützt die Initiative ausdrücklich.
Mit Beginn der Saison 2015/16 soll das Zertifikatsstudium erstmalig mit maximal 20 Teilnehmer/innen starten und neben ökonomischen Inhalten auch sportrechtliche, psychologische und kommunikative Aspekte umfassen. Es ist geplant, den Studiengang von Jahr zu Jahr alternierend in deutscher und englischer Sprache anzubieten, um das Programm allen europäischen Handballnationen zugänglich zu machen. Die inhaltliche Verantwortung für das Zertifikatsstudium liegt bei der Deutschen Sporthoch-schule Köln. Ein wissenschaftlicher Beirat, in dem neben der Hochschule auch EHF, Forum Club Handball und zwei externe renommierte Wissenschaftler/innen vertreten sind, fungiert beratend und unterstützend. In Kürze wollen die Europäische Handball Föderation und Deutsche Sporthochschule einen Kooperationsvertrag unterzeichnen sowie weitere Details zum Zertifikatsstudium bekanntgeben.
